Born and raised in Montana, Matthew Schreiner was near some of the most beautiful land known to man. From the first time his father introduced him to waterfowl hunting at the age of four, Matthew has been passionate about the sport. He credits this experience with building his love for the outdoors. The bitter mornings on the Bighorn River in Montana have held the most memorable times he has shared with his father. There was no substitute for hunting the raw winters with temps hovering around 20 below zero. "I tried to capture every detail, from the crystallized snow on the cattails to the brilliant orange feet of the Northern Mallard." He has spent countless hours studying the anatomy, behavior and habitat of birds and other wildlife while on the river. Matthew spent the majority of his childhood at his father's Fly Shop, where his artistic career began to flourish. Notepads were soon filled with wildlife containing correct anatomy and detail. He was a fanatic about birds, collecting new books, calls and movies at every opportunity. Soon Matthew could identify every bird native to Montana. His first major breakthrough came in 2003 when he won the Montana Junior Duck Stamp Contest. Matthew would continue his success, winning both the 2004 and 2005 Montana Junior Duck Stamps. Although Matthew has had formal art education, achieving a BFA, he believes some of the most important training has come from observing wildlife in the field and studying his favorite artists. Matthew paints both birds and mammals, concentrating on portraying each animal with accuracy and detail in their natural habitat. "What I find particularly appealing are the techniques in applying color and line, which I love for its presence." Matthew's main focus is to capture the true beauty of nature and rely on technique and skill to produce a unique piece of work.
